Lisa Gurine’s debut novel tells the story of a young girl who comes to America in thelate 1800s. Tragedy strikes on the journey that causes her to lose her parents and her ability to speak. She attaches herself to a German/Russian couple who settle in rural South Dakota. Now, as an elderly lady, she reflects on the people and place that shaped her life.
Lisa’s inspiration came from the stories of her parents’ and grandparents’ life on the prairie. Times were tough but along with the difficulties came humor and love. Many have described her novel a “Little House on the Prairie” only darker.

Lisa Gurine started composing little stories around eight years of age. Her father encouraged her writing by giving her a diary with a little lock on it around the same time. Her first novel, Without Words, is a fictional work comprised of a collection of stories she was told while growing up in South Dakota. She later published a children’s book, The Boy from the In Between, written as a gift for one of her many exchange students.
Lisa currently lives in Brooklyn Park, MN with her husband and their sweet black lab. She’s working on her third novel about a young man’s coming of age and journey of self-discovery as he travels around Europe.
