The Story of Downtown’s Little Raccoon

Long before Downtown Fargo became the lively, welcoming place we know today, there were already whispers of a little raccoon who seemed to like downtown better than anywhere else.

No one knows exactly when he first showed up.

Some say he came from the edge of Island Park. Some say he simply followed the lights. But everyone seemed to agree on a few things: he was cheerful, curious, a little mischievous, and always happiest where people were gathered.

He was not much for the quiet life.

While other animals stayed near the trees and riverbank, this little raccoon kept wandering toward the brick streets, shop windows, music, and laughter of downtown. He liked the feeling that something interesting might be happening just around the corner.

He was, in every sense, an urban forager.

Not just for snacks, though he certainly never turned down something tasty. He foraged for color. For sounds. For shiny little treasures. For the sort of fun that only happens when a city comes alive.

Then one summer, downtown seemed to burst into something even bigger.

The streets filled with people. Tables and booths stretched for blocks. There was art and food and music and handmade treasures everywhere he looked. The whole place buzzed with energy.

The little raccoon paused.

Then, as any curious downtown creature would, he scampered closer.

He weaved between boots and folding chairs, peeked under tables, sniffed the air, and admired all sorts of wonderful things. Paintings. Crafts. Trinkets. T-shirts. Good food. Happy crowds. Everywhere he looked, people were smiling, visiting, discovering, and carrying home little treasures of their own.

And somewhere in all that bustle and joy, the little raccoon found exactly what he had been looking for all along.

He found his place.

From then on, he became part of downtown lore.

People said they spotted him early in the morning before the crowds arrived. Some swore he had a favorite food stand. Others claimed he had very strong opinions about arts and crafts. Over time, he became one of those stories downtown people love to tell, part legend, part mascot, part mischievous little neighbor.

As Downtown Fargo grew brighter, busier, and more full of life, the raccoon seemed to belong even more.

He was curious.
He was playful.
He had an eye for little treasures.
And he knew that the best places were the ones filled with creativity, laughter, and community.

Now, many years later, Downtown Fargo is honoring that cheerful little urban forager with a permanent home of his own.

What began as a playful poster design by artist Nathaniel Navartill of Foley Studio, and was later brought to life in sculpture by Jay Ray of Jay Ray Sculpture, has become more than a character. It has become a symbol of something deeply downtown: creativity, joy, curiosity, and the fun of gathering together.

Today, this happy raccoon stands tall at Broadway Square, ready for photos, memories, and whatever adventure comes next.
