J. Malcolm Thompson has been a jeweler/printmaker since 1977. Originally focusing on hot-joint jewelry fabrication, he has branched out to lapidary, lost-wax casting and enameling. Working in precious metals, mixed media, and found objects, Malcolm explores the juxtaposition of the natural and man-make. Recycling his intaglio copper plates into jewelry, vestiges of his printmaking art often survive on the surfaces of his metal work. As a former professor of History, Malcolm constructs many pieces suggestive of historical artifacts. In 2022, he received a grant from the Arts Partnership to attend the Penland School of Craft to learn enameling technics to replicate Anglo-Saxon jewelry. Malcolm is part owner of Dakota Fine Art where he displays and sells his work. He is also a long-time resident of the PEARS print studio at Renaissance Hall, NDSU where he has taught Printmaking and Art History. Also offered to the public through Moorhead Community Education are Malcolm’s classes on silversmithing.
