Bill will share insights from his latest book, All Roads Lead to Rome: Searching for the End of My Father's War, which chronicles his journey retracing his father's World War II experiences with the First Special Service Force in Italy. Bill's father, originally a farmer from the Williston area, served as a U.S. Army commando in Italy during World War II. In his book, Bill alternates between reimagined battle scenes and present-day travels, exploring World War II and family history, the value and limits of memory, and our society's understanding and support of combat veterans.​

Bill Thorness has been a journalist for over thirty-five years, with work ranging from editing a national business magazine to freelance travel writing for the Seattle Times. He is the author of five nonfiction books, including Cycling the Pacific Coast: The Complete Guide from Canada to Mexico.​
